Electrospinning Overview

Electrospinning schematic

Electrospinning is probably one of the simplest process to construct nanofibrous structures. Since its rise to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s, research laboratories worldwide has been exploring the use of nanofibers in various applications. Advancement in the process has led to the ability to construct nanofiber-based membranes, tubes, 3-dimensional structures and yarns.

This process is used successfully in some air filtration industry but it has not been widely adopted. This is probably due to its relatively low yield in comparison with other fiber production method. Gaining widespread adoption will probably be dependent on successfully linking its technological advances with superior or unique product properties or functions.
